Productivity for copywriters: A paradigm shift

That statement was, for me, at the time that I read it, a paradigm shift in my thinking about the nature of productivity.

Written by performance experts Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, The Power of Full Engagement is the best book I have ever read (and studied), on productivity.

contentFor most of us, time is the enemy of productivity… something that we constantly chase but which is forever slipping through our fingers. “I don’t have time!”, we always say.

It seems radical to suggest that for eons, we’ve been focused on the wrong target in our pursuit of “productivity”— on that thing that’s always “out there”… away from us — that thing called time.

When in fact, time exists within us and can be used most efficiently as an expression of the quantity and quality of our energy output. (Sounds a little quantum, doesn’t it?)

And who wouldn’t like more high quality energy to “spend on time,” right?

According to Loehr and Schwartz, you can create energy in a number 0f ways, but they all fall under one of our four energy sources:

• Physical Energy
• Emotional Energy
• Mental Energy
• Spiritual Energy

As I worked through the categories, I was not surprised to find that some were easier to work with than others. “Manufacturing” energy through exercise is not foreign to me, and so it was the easiest category to see results from.

But I suspect that most of us are out of balance in certain areas of our lives, and I found that for me, the hardest energy center for me to work with was the Spiritual, simply because I find it almost excruciatingly painful to be still in mind or body for any length of time that would produce results.

So suffice it to say, “I’m still working on that.”

If you’ve ever studied productivity like I have, you’d have found that there’s plenty of “fluff” written on the subject. And nothing that’s concrete for the writer.

As I purchased and pored over the relevant books, I found that aside from The Power of Full Engagement, two other books were worth their salt:

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, by David Allen, is a well-deserved classic.

And Bit Literacy: Productivity in the Age of Information and E-mail Overload, by Mark Hurst, tackles the energy-sucking minutiae of life on the computer.

In my studied opinion, these are the three best books on productivity on the market. And I drew from them in creating the only productivity course ever created for writers — Productive Profits™ for Freelance Writers.
