So, here’s the deal, I used to look at my mentor like they were a copywriting wizard.

Every campaign they touched? Pure gold. Meanwhile, I was over here, struggling to make my words pop. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t hit that level.

Then it hit me, this was just like The Karate Kid. Remember when Mr. Miyagi had Daniel doing all that boring stuff, "wax on, wax off," painting fences, sanding floors? Daniel thought it was pointless, but little did he know, all that repetition was building his skills.

That’s exactly how I approached copywriting.

Instead of trying to be clever or flashy, I went back to the basics. I simplified my sentences, aiming for crystal-clear messaging. I stopped trying to sound smart and focused on making my copy easy to read.

Next, I learned the power of the active voice. Instead of "The sale was launched," I went with "We launched the sale"—boom, instant energy! It made a huge difference.

But here’s the kicker, I realized people don’t buy products, they buy feelings. So, I started weaving emotions into my copy.

Fear, excitement, hope, whatever my audience needed to feel, I made sure it was in my words. And guess what? It worked.

Oh, and I wrote every single day. Just like Daniel sanding those floors, I practiced non-stop.

Some days it was rough, but it sharpened my skills like you wouldn’t believe. I also studied the pros, analyzing ads and campaigns to figure out what made them tick. Eventually, I knew when to break the rules, throw in a surprise here and there to keep things fresh.

And one day? I realized I’d surpassed my mentor. Not with magic tricks, but with good ol’ “wax on, wax off”, mastering the basics, practicing constantly, and knowing when to take risks.

So, if you want to outshine your mentor, start with the fundamentals. Write every day. Keep learning. And before you know it, you’ll be the copywriting wizard everyone’s looking up to.

You will be surprised on how these basic principles will help improve your copywriting.
