Yep, as crazy as that may sound…
It was the opening subject that a pro copywriter used in his email newsletter as he was trying to help a friend sale his course.
It just indicated that they were going to have a three way call at night with the reader.
The response? Mind-blowing. People couldn’t resist replying to that email.
But why?
Let's break it down using a monkey analogy:
If you place a bunch of bright yellow bananas in the middle of a field where a monkey lives, the monkey will go straight for them.
Because monkey eat banana, monkey feel good
But if you hide them under a rock, the monkey won’t bother.
Humans are, in a way, like monkeys. We make decisions based on emotions, especially when something grabs our attention.
So no matter how good you think your copy is or how good your product is, if it doesn't grab people's attention. You are fucked.
That’s why controversy has always been powerful because that's what it does. Controversial statements ignite emotions, which is why they work so well.
The subject line "Threesome Tonight" does just that. It speaks to both the angel and devil on our shoulders. This internal argument between angel and devil in us sparks an emotional reaction.
Since buying decisions are driven by emotion, Controversial statements that stir feelings are gold for copywriters.
Don't get me wrong, this has to be used well to achieve the desired result so it will take a good amount of practice.
So, the next time you're writing a copy, ask yourself: does this trigger any emotion in my reader?
Till next time,
Chao!
